Comedy juggler Stephen Caruso of Bangor was named Pennsylvania’s Funniest Comic.  He won the designation on Saturday at the Keystone Comedy Festival in Altoona, Blair County.
Caruso, 24 also took home the $1,000 top prize at the event.
Caruso was first to go on stage.  His routine, which involves juggling, comedy, and audience participation, is “very family friendly,” he says.  “I didn’t have to anything off-color,” unlike the others’ routines.
Caruso, a full-time entertainer and juggling trainer, grew up in Saylorsburg.  He started juggling at age 13, after being inspired by a juggler at Disney World.  “I pretty much lived and breathed it,” he says.  When other kids were going to the movies with their friends, he was at home or at the gym, practicing his juggling.
At 18, he won the World’s Best Jugglger-Under 18 title.  After graduating from high school, he took his act to the seas, working on cruise ships in the Caribbean and learning to work comedy into his juggling routines.
He now thinks of his act as comedy, he says.  “The juggling is the vehicle for the comedy,” says Caruso, who can juggle with his eyes closed.
Now Married, he tries to keep most of his gigs on land, doing corporate and private events.  And, in the next year or two, he again plans to enter the World’s Best Juggler championship.
